Digital Logistics boosts business in transport
Intelligent information and communication systems are core components in the logistics business: not surprisingly, then, digitalization is a key topic for all logistics companies. This is reflected, too, at transport logistic, which takes place between May 5 and 8, 2015 at the Messe München exhibition center—both in terms of the emphasis placed on this theme in the supporting program and as regards the high number of IT companies registered to exhibit. So far 199 companies will be showcasing their products and services in the show´s IT section, which takes up an entire hall—Hall B2.
Industry 4.0, ‘Big Data’, the ‘Cloud’ and e-commerce are just some of the terms and concepts that logistics professionals are tackling nowadays. In a globalized sector such as logistics, digitalization offers great potential: for example, through cost-reduction, more flexibility and higher transparency. But it also presents challenges such as data security and communication infrastructure.
The applications being used today, the trends that are shaping the market and what all this means for companies and their customers—all this and more visitors and exhibitors will be able to experience first hand at transport logistic. The supporting program kicks off on Tuesday, May 5 with an event called “Intelligent World—On Stage Show: Ways into the Future”. This is a joint initiative by the German Federal Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure and the industry association BITKOM. Through films and interviews this event explores issues connected with intelligent mobility and the digital society. Also on Tuesday is the forum “Industry 4.0—A Future Concept based on AutoID and RTLS Systems”. Here, the association AIM-D and the companies Avus Services and smart-TEC will be putting the focus on application scenarios in real-time localization.
On Thursday, May 7, there will be two panel discussions on the subject of ‘Big Data’, organized respectively by Deutsche Verkehrsforum and BITKOM. In the first, entitled “Logistics goes digital—What can Big Data, the Cloud, etc. contribute?”, representatives from IBM Deutschland, Schenker, the Hamburg Port Authority and others will be discussing the limits of digitalization, what value this trend brings to SMEs and whether value-creation is shifting away from the transport chain towards IT service providers. The second, entitled “Big Data in Logistics—Many new opportunities”, is about successful solutions, discussed by speakers from the Fraunhofer IML, DB Schenker and Splunk Deutschland.
The increase in online trading is the subject under the spotlight in “Intralogistics in times of e-commerce—Technologies and Potential”, organized by the trade journal F+H Fördern und Heben of the Vereinigte Fachverlage. Here, representatives from the Beumer Group, SSI Schäfer and Bito-Lagertechnik Bittmann will be discussing the significant challenges of online trading and how fully comprehensive systems and facilities can deliver the required service. A second event on this theme, entitled “Logistics Solutions made in Germany: Innovative Approaches for E-Commerce”, is being organized by the Logistics Alliance Germany.
