Serbia on Europe’s intermodal map – Cargo Conference Belgrade to gather logistics leaders on October 30

Following European and global trends in modern logistics flows, the PlutonLogistics portal will organize the second edition of Cargo Conference Belgrade on October 30th, 2025, this time under the title “Next Stop: Intermodal.”

The international conference will take place at the Radisson Collection Hotel, Old Mill, with more than 200 participants and 20 speakers expected. Most seats have already been booked, with confirmed attendance from Serbia, Germany, Austria, Turkey, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Greece, the Netherlands, Croatia, Slovenia, and others. The event will bring together representatives of intermodal terminals, railway and logistics operators, ports, shipping companies, cargo owners, as well as state and scientific institutions. They will be joined by developers of technologies and infrastructure to exchange experiences and jointly contribute to sustainable development.

Shifts in foreign trade orientation and growing exchange with distant destinations have increased the volume of container transport in Serbia. Ports traditionally relied on by the country are expanding and boosting their container capacity, opening opportunities for further growth in this segment. At the same time, both domestic and foreign investors are continuing to invest in the development of intermodal terminals across Serbia, opening new routes and services. Recently, the long-awaited Batajnica Intermodal Terminal, a major state project, became operational.

  • After the great success of our first conference dedicated to rail cargo and the strong response from the business community, this year we are moving forward with even more energy. Our focus is on intermodal transport, bringing together all players in the chain – from shipping companies to the last mile, as well as those who want their goods transported in an efficient and sustainable way – said Marija Kambić, Editor-in-Chief of PlutonLogistics.

Key questions in container transport

Through panel discussions, keynote speeches, and on-stage interviews, representatives of domestic and international companies, state administration, and business associations will address some of the key issues in the sector:

  • What are the current opportunities and what prospects does the future hold for intermodal transport in the region?
  • How is the legislative framework defined, what institutional support exists, and how developed is the infrastructure?
  • Which types of cargo in Serbia and the region are most efficiently transported via intermodal services?
  • How can combining multiple modes of transport optimize costs and delivery times?
  • How can shifting to combined transport reduce CO2 emissions, which is crucial for business sustainability, reputation, and regulatory compliance?
  • Which routes are currently covered by intermodal services from Serbia? What is planned for the future?
  • How developed is the terminal network in Serbia? What equipment and technologies are available?

Additionally, the conference will highlight some interesting concrete questions:

  • Which country, partly thanks to services from Serbia, increased traffic at its intermodal terminals by more than 120% in 2024?
  • How many road hauliers in Serbia transport containers?
  • Is cargo transport from China by truck and rail a myth or reality?
  • How are two terminals owned by different companies jointly developing the Turkey–Serbia intermodal route?

The event will also feature B2B meetings, giving participants the chance to initiate new partnerships through direct talks.

European combined transport – the lifeline of rail

Despite strong challenges, particularly due to infrastructure works and restrictions, European combined transport has remained the most vital part of rail freight. In 2024, the number of shipments increased by 5.19%, while total ton-kilometers (t/km) rose by 8.41%, reflecting a higher average cargo weight per transport unit. Today, every other freight train in Europe is intermodal.
